Accept the Unknown
One of the reasons we do all this predicting and assuming is because we want to know what is going to happen next. We want to be prepared. We want to be in control so we can prevent bad things from happening. Seems pretty reasonable, right? But we’re actually attempting to do something that has little chance of success. It’s simply a waste of time.
It’s hard to be 100 percent certain about anything. A lot of times when we think we’re sure, we’re just taking our best guess. For instance, are you 100 percent sure the TV will go on the next time you turn it on? How do you know for sure? Would you bet a million dollars on it? What if the cord was loose or unplugged? What if the circuits in the TV had burned out?
How sure are you? ___________ percent
Let’s try another one. Are you 100 percent sure the president of the United States is alive right now? How can you be sure? Is it possible something happened and you just don’t know about it yet?
How sure are you? ___________ percent
Our best guess is that the TV will turn on and the president is still living; however, we cannot be 100 percent, absolutely sure. And that’s okay. We’re sure enough. That is why you probably don’t think about these kinds of things; most of the time you’re sure enough not to spend any more time thinking about them. But sometimes, our phobias make us believe we have to be certain about something. At these times, instead of listening to your phobia, you can remind yourself that we’re not really certain about anything, especially when it comes to predicting the future.
Am I wanting to be certain? About what? ______
______
______
Do I need to be 100 percent sure? Why or why not? ______
______
______
Have you ever heard the saying “anything is possible”? People usually use this saying to increase their motivation and willingness to explore. If anything is possible, we can set incredible goals and won’t be held back by limitations. This phrase is also a reminder that it’s normal to be uncertain. We don’t know everything and we can’t predict everything. By accepting the unknown, we accept some amount of risk, but we also allow for opportunity and growth.
